As it shows the topic of my Masterthesis is still one of my focus also in my professional life.
A lot of my activities as Technical Projectmanager and System Engineer evolve around early stage design in collaborative product development.
Hereby the questions how well the customers are understood and how well their requirements are interpreted in the design concept
and finally in the product is of utmost interest.
Three issues have a central meaning for me:
- Interpretation and Prioritization of Customer Requirements (CR´s)
- The efficient Process of the Design Synthesis from a given set of CR´s towards an Accepted Design
- Tools which help the Design Process
Interpretation and Prioritization of Customer Requirements (CR´s)
The customers’ satisfaction will be strongly influenced by the quality of the comprehension and interpretation of customer requirements (CRs).
At the early stage CRs might also be understood as product requirements, because of their general and strategic character.
So to understand customers at the early stage not only customers’ concerns have to be considered,
but developers’ organization (marketing strategy, cost strategy, image etc.) and societal concerns (product safety, environmental
concerns, insurance concerns etc.) as well.
In order to develop a product these numerous and complex requirements have to be categorized and prioritized,
in short they have to be interpreted in order to be able to formulate an engineering strategy.
Process of the Design Synthesis
My interest is the process involved in this strategic point of the product development and its influence
on the whole product and the customers’ satisfaction.
